Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This is a difficult time for our city, and I want to thank everyone for doing their part by continuing to follow the shelter-in-place order.  By following the local local shelter-in-place order, staying home, and practicing social distancing we can protect one another and save lives.Though our lives have changed in ways that we couldn’t have imagined just weeks ago, I have also been inspired by the incredible leadership of District 7 neighborhood associations that have stepped up to outreach to our senior and vulnerable residents. While Resilient Miraloma Park, West Portal, METNA, Lakeside 1, and Community Connectors have already began outreaching and activated their members, my office is working to support and engage our other neighborhood associations to leverage relationships in their communities so that those who may want or need support know that it is available. I want to ensure that everyone in District 7 is made aware of available resources and we unite as a community to help one another.We have weathered hard times as a city before, and we will all get through this by supporting one another. FIGHT COVID-19 XENOPHOBIA

This week, I joined all of my colleagues on the Board of Supervisors in introducing a Resolution condemning the hateful, xenophobic rhetoric and attacks on our Asian community.  In the midst of a global pandemic, we should be led by our humanity, but the White House Administration has been purposefully sowing racism instead. The usage of terms like “Chinese flu,” “Wuhan Virus,” and “Kung-Flu” are not just offensive, they are dangerous and incite violent division.There is no racial or ethnic bias to COVID-19 and we must stand united to stop this type of scapegoating and fear mongering in its tracks. Racism is contagious. The recent accounts of Asian residents nationwide, even here in San Francisco, getting accosted or physically attacked is downright scary and unacceptable. No one should have to be living in fear of being attacked. Please join us in standing united to support our Asian American community.

Chinese for Affirmative Action (CAA) and Asian Pacific Policy and Planning Council teamed up to create a #StopAAPIHate incident reporting system. As of March 23, they had over 450 reports. Of the ones reported from San Francisco, a third were violent. Report incidents at here.

If you are a victim of a violent attack, please CALL 9-1-1 and make a formal police report especially if you believe you have been a target of a hate crime.

TENANT AND HOMEOWNER RESOURCES

No one should have to worry about losing their housing because of COVID-19, and we will continue working hard to ensure that is the case for everyone here in San Francisco.Mortgage Payment Relief 

Yesterday, Governor Newsom announced that several major banks including Wells Fargo, Citibank, JPMorgan and US Bank, as well as 200 state-chartered banks and credit unions have agreed to provide a 90-day grace period to homeowners struggling to make their monthly payments due to financial impacts of COVID-19. Eviction MoratoriumIf you’re a renter, I want to make sure everyone is aware of the temporary moratorium on evictions issued by Mayor Breed for those financially impacted by COVID-19.  If you are a tenant or landlord looking for guidance on the moratorium on evictions, please visit this city informational webpage for more information.

LOST YOUR JOB OR WORK HOURS REDUCED?

Unemployment Insurance: If you were laid off or had your work hours reduced due to COVID-19, you can file an Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim.

SICK? VULNERABLE? QUARANTINED?

Paid Sick Leave (City): San Francisco’s Paid Sick Leave Ordinance requires employers to provide paid sick leave to all employees who perform work in San Francisco including temporary and part-time employees, as highlighted by the San Francisco Office of Labor Standards Enforcement.

Disability Insurance (State): If you’re unable to work due to medical quarantine or illness related to COVID-19 (certified by a medical professional), you may be eligible for State Disability Insurance.

CAREGIVING? SCHOOL CLOSURES? CHILD CARE?

Paid Family Leave (State):  If you’re unable to work because you are caring for an ill or quarantined family member with COVID-19, or a child home from school due to COVID-19 closure, you may qualify for Paid Family Leave. This provides up to six weeks of benefit payments (eight weeks starting July 1, 2020).

Covered California has extended the open enrollment period to June 30 to allow more residents to sign up for health coverage. Job loss due to COVID-19 is now a qualifying life event for enrollment in Covered California.

SFUSD SCHOOL CLOSURES EXTENDED

SFUSD temporary school closures have been extended through May 1. San Francisco is one of six Bay Area counties to announce extending school closures this week.

SFUSD is continuing to provide free meals to students and families. Please check sfusd.edu/schoolfood for the latest list of pick-up locations and times. 

PARKS AND OPEN SPACES

Playgrounds Closed

Due to COVID-19, San Francisco’s Recreation and Parks Department has CLOSED all playgrounds. No playgrounds should be used at this time. Parks, trails, and open spaces will remain open.

Keep Your Distance 

Healthy people under age 60 can continue to spend time outdoors while complying with the social distancing DPH guidance of staying at least 6 feet apart from one another at all times. It is OK to go outside to walk your dog, go for a walk, run, ride a bike, and hike alone or with someone in your household. 

SFMTA – MUNI SERVICE CHANGES

Starting March 30, the Muni Metro underground system will be closed. Bus shuttles will provide service on all Muni Metro lines. This is for the health and safety of riders. The closure will allow SFMTA to redirect custodial resources to other, higher-use facilities and minimize risk to the station agents.

Muni Rapid routes—the 5R, 9R, 28R, and 38R—will also be temporarily discontinued, except for the 14R Mission Rapid.

Staff and janitors will be assigned to bus lines to ensure the highest health and safety standards on all bus routes.

Please remember to stay at home except for essential trips.

“Senior Only” Store Hours 

Some stores have implemented “Senior Only” hours. Although the dedicated hours are great, I would like to encourage seniors and those that are immunocompromised to utilize delivery services or have others pick up what you need as much as you can to further protect your well-being.

In addition, as the economic impact of COVID-19 increases, please do not forget to support your local District 7 businesses.

HOW YOU CAN HELP – VOLUNTEER OR DONATE

The City and County of San Francisco can now accept tax-deductible monetary contributions through Give2SF Fund. The Give2SF Fund will support City efforts to respond to COVID-19 and help protect the health of San Francisco and support the most vulnerable, including individuals, families, and local businesses.

COVID-19 Emergency Response Volunteer (CERV) Program 

The most important thing you can do to help respond to COVID-19 is to follow the Department of Public Health’s directives and recommendations to curb the spread of the virus. If you are sick – stay home.  If you are healthy, now more than ever, organizations that serve our most vulnerable residents need your help.

The City and Shanti Project have launched the COVID-19 Emergency Response Volunteer (CERV) Program. Volunteers will do grocery shopping, deliver pet food, medication, and other essentials, and pick up mail for seniors and other vulnerable populations who are advised to limit outdoor exposure.
