Good Bye and Thank You, Almir

Almir Zalihic, owner of Monterey Deli for the last eight years, is leaving; he has sold his successful and popular local shop to a new owner. The deli has always been a friendly place to pick up a good sandwich, snack, or craft beer.

Almir has a few words for his Sunnyside neighbors:

“I would like to say thank you to all of the neighbors who supported us over the years. I enjoyed my time in the Sunnyside neighborhood, and I’ve made a lot of close friends. 2020 has been a wild year for everyone, and I felt like it was time for a change for me—especially since my wife and I are expecting a baby girl in March. I do plan to stay in the industry, currently I am working with the sales department of a wine and spirits distributor, so maybe one day the deli will be one of my accounts.”

Sunnyside Neighborhood Association wishes to thank Almir for his consistent support of SNA over the years. For each and every SNA quarterly meetings, Almir generously donated a platter of his excellent sandwiches, and big carafes of hot coffee and hot water for tea, as well as lunch-for-two gift certificates for the meeting raffles.

You will be missed, Almir. We wish you luck with the next chapter of your life!

Throughout the last covid-19 year, Almir has kept his shop open to serve the needs of Sunnyside neighbors and regulars, taking care to stock relevant supplies in the early days like toilet paper and disinfectant, as well as all the usual treats that many of us needed more of in these stressful times.

SNA President Ken Hollenbeck said:

“Monterey Deli wasn’t your standard corner store, as it provided a highly curated selection of beer, wine and snacks, and also had made-to-order fresh sandwiches, coffee and breakfast items.”

Paula Truong and her husband T.R. are the new owners of the deli, and are presently remodeling the store. They live nearby, and also own Red Planet Roastery in Oakland. As yet there is no definite re-opening date.

Changes for businesses and transit during Covid-19 reopening

UPDATE, June 26: Hair salons, barbers, indoor dining, outdoor bars, outdoor pools, indoor museums WILL NOT be opening on Monday June 29th. The City has given no new date has been given for these types of businesses to reopen.

Several changes have come into effect, or soon will, related to Covid-19 restrictions.

Transportation:

Muni Service: As of Saturday June 13th, the 43-Masonic began running, but the northern terminus will be Masonic and Geary. Read more about other lines re-starting here. 

As of Monday July 15th, SFMTA began enforcing street-sweeping violations by parked cars.

Businesses and services:

As of Friday June 12th, restaurants began to operate with outdoor dining. Details here. Also in D7 Supervisor Yee’s newsletter here.

As of Monday June 15th, the following are allowed: non-emergency medical appointments, private indoor services like house-cleaners, indoor retail, manufacturing (with limits). Anyone who can still work from home is asked to continue doing so. Also allowed: Summer camps (with limits), religious gatherings, and pro sports with no spectators present. Read more here. 

As of Monday June 29th, the following will be allowed to operate: Hair salons, barbers, outdoor bars, outdoor pools, indoor museums. Read more here.  Also this SF Examiner article.

[Update: this stage of re-opening has also been delayed (July 7)]: As of Monday July 13th [PENDING STATE APPROVAL], indoor dining and real estate open houses will be allowed.Read more here. 

Libraries:

Unfortunately, at this time there is no announcement about the reopening of SF Public Libraries. The word is that there will first be a curbside pickup program, and then a reopening of a few branches. Meanwhile, your hardworking librarians are doing service as Covid-19 contact tracers.
