Detroit Steps Project Receives New Grant

DETROIT STEPS PROJECT A 2021 RECIPIENT OF COMMUNITY CHALLENGE GRANT

Funding for the Next Phase of the Project is Awarded!

The Detroit Steps Project (DSP), was announced as one of 28 recipients of the Community Challenge Grant Program (CCG), a division of the City Administrator’s office. DSP was allocated $110,185 in funding. This is the largest grant received by the Detroit Steps Project to date.

The DSP began efforts on this beautification project in November 2018. It was awarded District 7 Participatory Grant funds in 2019 to replace a chain link fence and install a water meter. Using these funds, the DSP will commence on additional safety and beautification efforts for this multi-phase project

  • Add pedestrian safety lighting to Upper and Lower Detroit Steps walkway
  • Terrace and landscape the upper steps, implementing winning CCSF student’s design
  • Install a decorative archway at the Lower Steps entrance off Monterey Boulevard

Presently the site lacks sufficient lighting. This will initiate the steps needed to create a safe and usable space for the community. The grant award will also fund professionally leveling and engineering the Upper Step terraces for landscaping so that additional native plants can grow and the space can become a “Pollinator Corridor” attracting native butterflies and bees.

Lastly, the funding will support the design, fabrication installation of a custom archway on Monterey Boulevard over the Lower Steps, using material and custom design to compliment the new fencing along Monterey. Brad Kessler, has been selected to fabricate and install the archway.

“These funds go towards helping define the character of the Sunnyside neighborhood,” said Pam Parker, a founding member of the Detroit Steps Project group.“This also paves the way for future funding opportunities towards fully tiling the Detroit Steps,” Parker said. “Creating a neighborhood landmark for all to enjoy.”
